Pennsylvania whitewater, Big Run Lawrence county, Savannah Road to Shenango River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS III-IV     1.5 miles   This stretch of Big Run in Pennsylvania is 1.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV section of whitewater. The scenic beauty of Pennsylvania and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. Big Run doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Savannah Road to Shenango River section is the only one. The campgrounds here at Big Run are pretty good. Some people prefer     whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. There are many good hotels to choose from, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The starting point is not too far from New Castle. This stretch is short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Pennsylvania you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. Briefly about the general area: At Big Run you always meet someone from New Castle;   when you're here it's always fun to check out McConnell's Mill State Park. Big Run gets a normal amount of rainfall. June is when you get the most rain here, and the driest of the months is February. Summer brings highs in the 80's to Big Run with night lows in the 50's.
