The Portland Mills to Cooksburg section of Clarion River in Jefferson County is 28 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. The nature scenery of Jefferson     County and the water flowing gracefully down Clarion River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Portland Mills to Cooksburg section is one of them. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other spots for that. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away   from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Briefly about the general area: Hiking along the Pine Run Trail is tremendous fun, and during your journey here you'll meet some folks from Sigel for sure. Going for a hike along the Callen Run Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this region. Cook Forest State Park is both splendid and wonderful, and it's next to Clarion River. For the duration of the warmest time of the year at Clarion River highs are mostly in the 80's. Through the dark hours of summer temperatures descend down into the 50's.
