Pennsylvania whitewater, Elk Creek Centre county, Smulton to Penns Creek section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-III     7.8 miles   This stretch of Elk Creek is 7.8 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so better not forget that many runs in this state are very easy. The put-in is not too far from Lock Haven, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The scenic beauty of Centre County and     the water flowing gracefully down Elk Creek are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with not too many other rivers for that. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's perfect for a one day trip. Briefly   about the general area: You're sure to bump into some nice folks from Millheim here; the Dry Hollow Trail is a fine hiking trail close by. A journey to Waterhouse Gap is always fun, and if the weather is good, you can go for a hike along the Kerstetter Path. This river is so great. The annual rainfall here at Elk Creek is about average. Most of the rain falls throughout June while January is mostly the driest month. For the period of the warm months here at Elk Creek, high temperatures frequently get into the 80's. Summer nighttime lows plunge down to the 50's. The winter comes with highs in the 30's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Elk Creek.
