The nature scenery of South Carolina and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside South Carolina you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers in this state are     less demanding. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. The Highway 11 to Flat Shoals Bridge stretch of Flat Shoal River is 4.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III(IV) section. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it   on an afternoon. Briefly about the general area: Oconee State Park is worth visiting if you're at Flat Shoal River, and there are plenty of people from Tamassee here. Good hiking is available along the Winding Stairs Trail. A spree to Flat Shoal River wouldn’t be complete without a tour to nearby Francis Marion-Sumter National Forests; there's magnificent hiking along the Foothills Trail. Through the summertime months at Flat Shoal River temperatures are mostly in the 70's, and through the night it cools down to the 50's. The winter comes with highs in the 40's; night lows throughout the wintertime for Flat Shoal River tend to be in the 20's.
