South Carolina whitewater, Flat Shoal River

Oconee county, Flat Shoals Bridge to Tanyard Bridge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I-III     3 miles
The starting point is not too far from Seneca, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This stretch of Flat Shoal River in South Carolina is 3 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-III section of whitewater. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance
then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. This is a pretty short section
so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so keep in mind that rivers in this state are not as hard as elsewhere. The campgrounds here at Flat Shoal River are pretty good. The wonderful Oconee County scenery and the sparkling
of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile.

Briefly about the general area:
Lots of people from Tamassee come to Flat Shoal River; why not take a refreshing hike along the Foothills Trail. Nothing beats kicking back at East Beach; visiting Oconee State Park is a good thing to do. At this river you will never have a bad time. The Winding Stairs Trail offers hiking at its best; a great place like Francis Marion-Sumter National Forests is too good to leave out. Flat Shoal River mostly gets a large amount of rainfall. The month of March is the wettest with most of the rain, and April is the month with the least moisture.
