South Carolina whitewater, Island Creek Spartanburg county, Cornmill Road Close to Mayo to Pacolet River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III     6 miles   This stretch of Island Creek is 6 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The beautiful scenery of Spartanburg County and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers in this state are suitable for beginners. There are some good stretches to     paddle in this river system, the Cornmill Road Close to Mayo to Pacolet River stretch is one of them. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. There's camping available near Island Creek. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling spots. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from   Spartanburg, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Briefly about the general area: Island Creek is a spot with many visitors from Cowpens, and you absolutely must pop by Croft State Park while you're here. All through the months of summer highs here at Island Creek reach the 80's. Summer overnight lows descend down to the 60's. For the period of the wintertime highs are frequently in the 50's, and overnight lows at Island Creek through the winter typically sink into the 20's. Island Creek gets a great deal of water. March is when you get the most rain here, and the driest month of the year is April.
