South Dakota whitewater, Redwater

Lawrence county, Highway 85 to first bridge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I(II)     3 miles
The beautiful scenery of South Dakota and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. This stretch of Redwater in Lawrence County is 3 miles long and has been rated as a class I(II) section by American Whitewater. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in South Dakota are often easier than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are
quite easy. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. The Highway 85 to first bridge section is the only paddling section along Redwater. You can pitch a tent or park your
RV at a nearby campground. There are many good hotels to choose from, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. If you're coming from Spearfish it's not a long drive at all to the starting location. This is a somewhat short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with not too many other
rivers for that.

Briefly about the general area:
There are glorious locations to explore along the Beaver Ridge Trail, and lots of people from Belle Fourche come here. Going for a hike on the Big Hill Ski Trail is always a great adventure. It is very dehydrated here at Redwater commonly. Of all the months in a year June is the one with the most rain while January is the month with the least amount of precipitation. During the long summer days at Redwater temperatures are commonly in the 80's with nighttime lows in the 50's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 30's with temperatures at Redwater dipping down into the 10's throughout winter nights.
