Lawernce county, City Park to Evans Park section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II     1.5 miles

Attempting to find someone in Spearfish to talk to about kayaking near Nash Street Bridge and find photo or memmory of old bridge before 1998.  Jerry Says Jerry Boyer

This stretch of Spearfish Creek is 1.5 miles long and is a class II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The scenic beauty of South Dakota and the playfulness of the water beats anything. The river winds through the Black Hills and you get great
scenery. There's camping available near Spearfish Creek. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. The put-in location is a short drive from Spearfish, there's a road
map further down the page with more info on that. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a pretty small number of paddling rivers. This is a bit of a short stretch so no need to bring snacks. No shortage of good hotels, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Whitewater rafting and
kayaking in South Dakota is often easier than elsewhere, so keep in mind that lots of rivers in this state are good for beginners.

Briefly about the general area:
Don't leave Spearfish Creek without first going for a hike along the Beaver Ridge Trail. At Spearfish Creek you always meet someone from Spearfish, and you can go for a hike on the Big Hill Ski Trail. Coming to this river is always a good idea. There's no such thing as a bad day of skiing at nearby Terry Peak. Spearfish Creek is in close proximity to Hungry Hollow Gulch which is definitely worth stopping at. Spearfish Creek is pretty dried up ordinarily.
