Tennessee whitewater, Elk River Carter and Avery county, Big Falls to Poga Rd section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS IV-V     5 miles   This section of Elk River in Tennessee is 5 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. The Big Falls to Poga Rd section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. Lodging is available near the river, and if you make reservations     in advance you're all set. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon trip. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Boone, as you can see on the road map further down. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. Briefly about the general area: There are plenty of people from Elk Park here at Elk River. A tour to Elk River wouldn’t be complete without a spree to nearby Roan Mountain State Park. Don't leave   Elk River without first going for a hike along the Laurel Fork Trail, and a nice location to visit is Cannon Gap. This river is so great. There are magnificent locations to look at along the Little Pond Mountain Trail, and the snow is good at Ski Beech. Elk River gets a typical amount of yearly precipitation. The wettest month of the year is usually July, that's the one that rains the most, and October meanwhile is the driest month. Summertime highs at Elk River regularly tend to be in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures plunge down into the 60's. Highs through the wintertime are regularly in the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Elk River.
