Tennessee whitewater, Moccasin Creek

Rhea county, Shut-In Gap Road to Piney River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I-II     1 miles
The natural beauty of Rhea County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Tennessee tend to be more challenging than the national average, so better not forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The Shut-In Gap Road to Piney River section of Moccasin Creek in Rhea County is 1 miles long and has been determined by American
Whitewater to be a class I-II section. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This is a very short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. The put-in location
is a short drive from Crossville, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Shut-In Gap Road to Piney River section is one of them. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more.
The beautiful Cumberland Plateau Mountains scenery is an added bonus. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll find a large number of good places.

Briefly about the general area:
Going for a hike on the Fooshee Pass Trail is always a wonderful adventure, and at Moccasin Creek you always meet someone from Evensville. Be careful coming to the Cumberland Plateau Mountains, you might not ever wanna go home again. There is a delightful hiking trail right next door to Moccasin Creek called the Laurel-Snow Trail; do put some time aside to spend at Rowe Spring while you're here at Moccasin Creek.
