Tennessee whitewater, Obey River - West Fork Overton Pickett county, TN 85n Bridge to Dale Hollow Lake section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II     15.5 miles   Did this route  on 7/2/17. The stretch between the first 2 bridges at the put in is basically not floatable even during normal water height. We ended up dragging our kayaks 80% of the way. The second bridge on was fine, but there were several areas where there was a strong oil/gas smell. The redeeming quality was that there was one amazing waterfall about 3/4 of the way that was ground fed, so it was very clean. Other than that, this route     is not very good. The wonderful Tennessee scenery and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Tennessee are harder than the national norm, so better not forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Cookevi lle, if you're not familiar with the area there's   a road map further down the page. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The beautiful Cumberland Plateau Mountains scenery is an added bonus. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your sleeping bag. There's camping available near Obey River - West Fork. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the TN 85n Bridge to Dale Hollow Lake stretch is just one of them.
