The wonderful Marion/ Hamilton County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This section of Suck Creek in Tennessee is 2 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class IV-V+ section of whitewater. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Chattanooga, as you can see on the road map further down. There are some good sections to paddle |
in this river system, the Suck Confluence to Knuckle Head section is one of them. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
| The river winds through the Cumberland Plateau Mountains and you get great scenery. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This is a somewhat short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good spots for that around here. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult | |
|
than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came.
Briefly
about the general area: The Hardy Trail offers hiking at its best; during your spree here you'll meet some folks from Whiteside for sure. These mountains rock, just look at all the cool stuff to do in the Cumberland
Plateau Mountains. There's delightful hiking along the Skyuka Trail. The high level of rain makes Suck Creek a rather wet place. All through March this area sees the most rain, and the driest month of the year is June.
