Texas whitewater, James River Mason county, FM 385 to FM 2389 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III     18 miles   It does not matter if they are putting in a door for kayaks to portage or not. The ranch still needs the proper permits. Also, what gives them the right to block a waterway that I as a citizen of Texas own. What if I don't want to use the door, but instead want to stay on the river. The ranch does not own the river, build a bridge with the proper permits if you want to get to your land on the other side. Says Anonymous Regarding fencing     a river: My understanding is that Texas defines and states in statute: that the definition of a navigable water way is the same as Federal Law, which is pretty clear that the land owner only owns up to the Normal High Water Mark. We who live along the river have no right to fence or deny access to any persons below that same high water mark. We do Not own the water, the river bottom below the Normal High Water Mark, nor do we own the fish or wildlife. These people either don't know the laws, or don't care. Has anyone approached the Corps of Engineers? Many of these guys often fail to realize that messing with the streambed requires a 404 permit from the Corps.   We like to float the Elm Fork of the Trinity, and a nearby farmer has just erected a 3 strand barb wire fence across the channel. Woe be to the first floater that gets hung up in it. Guess I will start with Corps for relief. Any ideas? Says M. Cavanagh The fence that is being constructed by Star S Ranch will not prevent any one from navigating the James River. There will be a large door which will allow people to portage canoes and kayaks around the fence. Says W Scott It is my understanding that the Star S Ranch is building a game proof/ human fence across the James River. This is about 8 miles above where the James and Llano meet.
