Texas whitewater, San Marcos River

Hays Caldwell Guadalupe county, San Marcos to Martindale section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I-II     11.5 miles

Don't miss the new whitewater park here on the San Marcos River, because it is always flowing at a clear 72 degrees from the giant San Marcos Springs. There is over 30ft of drop in the pristine top section of the San Marcos River (before the confluence with the Blanco River). So schedule a trip to San Marvelous as soon as you can. Says Ben Kvanli

The put-in is not too far from Austin-Round Rock, there's a road map further down the page
with more info on that. This section of San Marcos River is 11.5 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so go ahead and
pack your camp stove. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good rivers for that around here. The natural beauty of Texas and the water flowing gracefully down San Marcos River have people coming here. The average Texas whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so
if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the San Marcos to Martindale section is one of them. No need to look hard for hotels, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.

Briefly about the general area:
Good hiking is available along the Lockhart State Park Trail, and Lockhart State Park is a wonderful spot. At San Marcos River you always meet someone from Maxwell, and don't leave San Marcos River without first going for a hike along the Prospect Park Trail.
