  Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Vermont is often easier than elsewhere, so keep in mind that lots of rivers in this state are good for beginners. This section of Barton River in Orleans County is 21.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so pack your sleeping bag.
    No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here. The nature scenery of Orleans County and the water flowing gracefully down Barton River make the trip here worthwhile.
When you're paddling down a Green Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. If you're coming from Barre it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay  
the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The campgrounds here at Barton River are pretty good.

Briefly about the general area:
During your stay at Barton River do visit nearby Balm of Gilead Beach; Crystal Lake State Park is a great place to go to on a delightful day. You just can't picture the amount of outdoors amusing things the Green Mountains has to offer. Here at Barton River you'll almost certainly meet some folks from Orleans. Near Barton River you hit upon the Herbert Hawkes Hiking Trail which is a good hiking trail. Going for a hike on the Mount Pisgah Trail is always a tremendous adventure.
