  If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers in this state are not as hard as elsewhere. The natural beauty of Vermont and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. This section of Big Branch is 2.6 miles long and has been rated as a class V section by American Whitewater. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll
    have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Mt. Tabor to Appalachian Trail section is one of them. The starting location
is a reasonable drive from Rutland, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This is a short paddling stretch so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. The beauty of the Green Mountains  
is a great plus for this river. There's camping available near Big Branch.

Briefly about the general area:
There's perfect hiking along the Green Mountain Trail, and you can hit the slopes at Bromley Mountain in close proximity. But wait, there's more enjoyable things to do in the Green Mountains. Green Mountain National Forest is a good place to stretch your legs a bit; the Baker Peak Trail offers hiking at its best. This is a great river. Lots of people from Danby come to Big Branch, and when you're here it's always fun to have a look at Emerald Lake State Park.
