  The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Barre, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The beautiful scenery of Vermont and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This is a pretty short section so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. The 1st Hydro Dam to Winooski
    River section of Mad River in Washington County is 2 miles long and is a class II-III+(V) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the 1st Hydro
Dam to Winooski River section is one of them. There are some good hotels near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. The beautiful Green Mountains scenery is an added bonus. If you've  
been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Vermont you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers in this state are not as hard as elsewhere.

Briefly about the general area:
This is a popular location for folks from Moretown, and on a wonderful day you can take a hike along the Stevenson Brook Trail. Yep, outdoors enjoyable things truly is plentiful here in the Green Mountains. A trip to Little River State Park when you're here at Mad River is a magnificent idea, and while you're here you can take a hike along the Hedgehop Hill Loop Trail.
