Vermont whitewater, Middlebury River

Addison county, Ripton to East Middlebury section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS V     2.6 miles
This section of Middlebury River in Addison County is 2.6 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class V section. The starting location is a short drive from Rutland, as you can see on the road map further down. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers in this state are suitable for beginners. The wild
scenery of the Green Mountains is great. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good rivers for that around here. This section is quite short so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back
to put-in a few times. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. The wonderful
Addison County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Middlebury River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle.

Briefly about the general area:
Everybody nearby loves skiing at Sugarbush; going for a hike on the Oak Ridge Trail is always a splendid adventure. These mountains rock, just look at all the exciting stuff to do in the Green Mountains. Here at Middlebury River there are plenty of people from Salisbury, and Branbury State Park is both splendid and stunning. This river is always fun. Go for a hike on the Keewaydin Trail. From a rain point of view Middlebury River is a rather typical site.
