Vermont whitewater, Rock River

Windham county, South Newfane to West River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III-IV     3.3 miles
If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. If you're coming from Keene it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. The nature scenery of Vermont and the water flowing gracefully down Rock River beats anything. You might have to settle
for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large
number of good places. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This is a short paddling stretch so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the South Newfane to West River section is one of them. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come.

Briefly about the general area:
Jamaica State Park is a good site to pop by on a

delightful day, and a day on the slopes of Living Memorial Park is just what you need. Go for a hike on the Sunset Trail, and you're sure to come across some nice folks from Williamsville here. This is such a wonderful river. Good hiking is available along the Sunrise Trail, and stopping by Fort Dummer State Park is a fine thing to do. Rock River gets lots of water. For the duration of August this area sees the most rain, and February meanwhile is the driest month. Summertime highs at Rock River frequently tend to be in the 80's. For the duration of the moonlight hours it's regularly in the 50's.
