Vermont whitewater, Winooski River

Washington county, Marshfield to Montpelier section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-III     24 miles
The Marshfield to Montpelier section of Winooski River in Washington County is 24 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Barre, as you can see on the road map further down. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Vermont are often more forgiving than in other states, so keep in mind that rivers in this state are less demanding. Great
exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so why not pack your camp stove too. The natural beauty of Vermont and the playfulness
of the water attract people from near and far. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Marshfield to Montpelier section is one of them. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The river winds through the Green Mountains and you get great scenery. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. No
matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here.

Briefly about the general area:
New Discovery State Park is a pleasant spot to stretch your legs a bit; there are good spots to discover along the Kettle Pond Trail. Yeah, come up here to the Green Mountains for a good time. Elmore State Park is a pretty place any time of year, and not far from here you can enjoy the trees of Plainfield Town Forest. This river has it all. During your visit to Winooski River you'll meet some people from East Calais for sure. Go for a hike on the Owls Head Trail; Boulder Beach is rather nearby if you're in a beach type of mood.
