Virginia whitewater, Back Creek - Potomac Tributary

Frederick county, Route 50 to Dehaven section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I     12 miles

We kayaked Back Creek from Route 50 to just before 522. Took several hours and was over 14 miles. It had rained hard 2 days before our early June outing. There was enough water that we did not have to walk much. It was perfect for my 7yo daughter and 13 year old son and their friends who had never kayaked, other than on a lake. There is barbed wire crossing the creek in 3 areas along our paddle. We did not find a great spot to get out at. Says
    Jim A

The nature scenery of Frederick County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. The put-in location is a short drive from Winchester, as you can see on the road map further down.
The Route 50 to Dehaven stretch of Back Creek - Potomac Tributary is 12 miles long and it is classified as a class I section by American Whitewater. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your camp stove. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state
tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers in this state are not as hard as elsewhere. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.

Briefly about the general area:
On a splendid day at Back Creek - Potomac Tributary you can take a hike along the Old Romney Grade, and Cacapon State Park is both good and pretty.
