Virginia whitewater, Big Reed Island Creek Carroll county, Route 58 to US Route 221 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III     12.5 miles   Our home is located between Hwy 58 and 221 and rests on Big Reed.  My son and I took the canoe ride along this route and in a few places there were significant rocks which caused us a bit of difficulty.  We tipped over a few times and found the experience very relaxing.  Greatr wildlife scenes.  Great for the beginner.  Wear your mountain shoes and be prepared to get weet a couple of times!  We stopped at our home which can be viewed at     www.peacelodge.net Says Mark Eskew The wonderful Carroll County scenery and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections in this state are safe for beginners. When you're paddling down a Blue Ridge Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so why not pack your camping stuff too. If you're   coming from Mount Airy it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more.
