The Forks of Buffalo to Amherst stretch of Buffalo River is 19 miles long and it is classified as a class II section by American Whitewater. If you're coming from Lynchburg it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter,     so why not pack your sleeping bag too. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling places. This is one of a small number of paddling sections   in this river system, there are a few others too. Briefly about the general area: Lots of people from Clifford come to Buffalo River; glorious hiking is available along the Tolley Gap Trail. Buffalo River is a wet place that gets a great deal of precipitation. The month with most of the rain is October, and January is the month with the least moisture. Summertime highs at Buffalo River ordinarily tend to be in the 80's. Summer night lows descend down to the 60's. The winter comes with highs in the 40's, and after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at Buffalo River drop into the 20's.
