  The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the rivers in this state are not very demanding. The beautiful scenery of Carroll County and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. The Route 721 to Byllesby Dam on New River stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. Getting your paddling
    muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camping stuff. You can pitch a tent or park
your RV at a nearby campground. The wild scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains is great. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of places for that. The Route 721 to Byllesby Dam on New River section of Chestnut Creek in Virginia is 11.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Mount  
Airy, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. There are some good hotels near the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.

Briefly about the general area:
Chestnut Creek is a site with many visitors from Galax, and the Yellow Branch Trail is a nice hiking trail nearby. If you want a nice time in the great outdoors just come on up to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Near Chestnut Creek you discover the Bournes Branch Trail which is a pleasant hiking trail. For the period of the warmest time of the year here at Chestnut Creek, high temperatures regularly reach the 80's, and through the night it cools down to the 50's.
