Crab run is simply magnificent. The water is so pure and cold. Says Tyler Thtdude Humphries (see picture)
The Along Route 250 to McDowell section of Crab Run in Highland County is 3 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The put-in is not too far from Staunton-Waynesboro, as you can see on the road map further down. The campgrounds here at Crab Run are pretty good. The natural beauty |
of Virginia and the playfulness of the water beats anything. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. This section is quite short so no need
| to bring snacks. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of places for that. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if | |
|
you're not from around here don't forget that lots of rivers in this state are good for beginners.
Briefly about the general area: A magnificent place close to Crab Run is Seldom Seen Hollow, and you can go for
a hike on the Hupman Valley Trail. During your journey to Crab Run you'll meet some folks from Mc Dowell for sure; tremendous hiking is available along the Benson Run Trail. The surroundings of this river have so much to
offer. Crab Run sees pretty high levels of rain. The month of July is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest month of the year is February.
