The wonderful Patrick / Stokes (NC) County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. The put-in location is a short drive from Mount Airy, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you     want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers in this state are suitable for beginners. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Claudville to Jessup Mill stretch is just one of them. Briefly about the general area: You're sure to bump into some good people from Claudville here, and you can have a pleasant hiking adventure along the Run Trail. Places like Pilot Mountain State Park are wonderful to check out; going for a hike along the Moores Knob Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this vicinity. This river is a great place to visit. Hanging Rock State Park is a magnificent spot. Dan River gets a normal amount of annual rain.
