Virginia whitewater, Dunlap Creek

Alleghany county, Crows to Jackson River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I-IV     18.5 miles
The Crows to Jackson River section of Dunlap Creek in Alleghany County is 18.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-IV section of whitewater. The starting point is not too far from Roanoke, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good spots for that around here. If you've been whitewater
rafting and kayaking outside Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so better not forget that rivers in this state are less demanding. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Crows
to Jackson River section is one of them. The beautiful scenery of Virginia and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camping
stuff.

Briefly about the general area:
Dunlap Creek is right by the Brushy Mountain Trail, and there are plenty of folks from Covington here at Dunlap Creek. Hiking along the Little Allegheny Mountain Trail is splendid fun, and a tour here wouldn’t be complete without a visit to close by Jefferson National Forest. If you come to this river you will have a good time for sure. All through the days of summer at Dunlap Creek temperatures are mostly in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 50's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 30's, and after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Dunlap Creek sink into the 10's.
