The starting point is not too far from Lynchburg, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This stretch of James River is 29 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. If you hurry you can run     this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. The nature scenery of Amherst/ Bedford County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because   it is a very popular destination. Briefly about the general area: Take a hike on the Piney Ridge Trail; if you're visiting from Monroe, you won't be the only one. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Cashaw Creek Trail. James River gets a typical amount of yearly rainfall. The month with most of the rain is July while January is the month with the least amount of precipitation. For the period of the warm days of summer here at James River, high temperatures commonly get into the 80's with nighttime lows in the 60's. For the period of the winter this place gets highs in the 40's with temperatures at James River dipping down into the 20's during winter nights.
