Says DEREK REYNOLDS This picture was submitted to me by Lynda Hubbard ( now retired ) of the Clinch Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service in Wise, Virginia; a few years ago. It is of the upper falls on Little Stony Creek. I have been doing climate research in this area of the great High Knob massif, for some 20 years.     This is a high precipitation area on average. It should be understood that the High Knob massif forms a sprawling highcountry area along the Wise-Scott border ( into extreme NE Lee County ), and from base to base represents the widest mountain mass in all of southwestern Virginia. This great width impacts precipitation, with significant enhancements across the mid-upper elevations during favorable patterns ( unlike 2007 which has been the driest year on record with a general 40-46'' across the upper elevations so far ). Says Wayne Browning (see picture) The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Kingsport-Bristol, as you can see on the road map further   down. The Little Stony Falls to Hanging Rock stretch of Little Stony Creek is 3 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class V+ section of whitewater. The beautiful scenery of Scott County and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so better not forget that many of the rivers in this state are not very demanding. This is a pretty short section so no need to bring snacks. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Little Stony Falls to Hanging Rock section is one of them.
