Virginia whitewater, Moormans River Albemarle county, Charlottesville Reservoir to Free Union section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-III     13.5 miles   We went down the Moormans from Millington to 601, on Saturday, April 29. The USGS guage was at about 4. 0 and the water was at the zero on the bridge pier. That's just enough not to be dragging everywhere. There are 3 trees across the river between Milington and 601. One is OK to go under; one you have to go around, and the third I should have gone around but lay in the bottom of the canoe and got through. There's another tree     across between 601 and the rock where the Meechums comes in, and that one's bad too. Had to wade under. The old takeout at the 601 bridge is posted, and I had thought to paddle up the Meechums to the other bridge which is not too difficult to negotiate. But when the water is high enough to make the Moormans passable, it's a bit too swift on the Meechums. It is possible, but not pleasant to wade and pull the boat, but I don't recommend it. Still, a very pretty trip, with lots of variety. If the water had been any higher, the fallen trees would be truly dangerous. Says Seth Warner Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Virginia tend to be more forgiving   than the national average, so keep in mind that many of the sections in this state are safe for beginners. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Charlottesville, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camp stove.
