  This stretch of New River is 52.2 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-III section of whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The nature scenery of Virginia and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want
    to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Claytor Lake to State line stretch is just one of many. The starting
point is not too far from Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, so better bring your camping gear along. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. There's camping available near New River.

Briefly about the general area:
 
New River is right next door to Claytor Lake State Park which is a beautiful site; New River is a site with many visitors from Belspring. While you're here at New River you can take a hike along the Ripple Trail; you can have a splendid hiking adventure along the Conservancy Trail. This is a really good river. During the summertime months at New River temperatures are frequently in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 60's. Throughout the winter highs are in the 30's; overnight lows through the wintertime for New River tend to be in the 20's. New River gets a typical amount of annual precipitation.
