  If you're coming from Mount Airy it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful Carroll/ Wythe/ Pulaski/ Grayson County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down New River attract people from near and far. The average Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that lots of rivers in
    this state are good for beginners. The Fries to Allisonia section of New River in Virginia is 32 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. Not
too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. A stretch of this length does require some preparations, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. The Fries  
to Allisonia section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.

Briefly about the general area:
If the weather is magnificent here at New River, you can go for a hike along the Yellow Branch Trail. While you're here at New River you will meet lots of people from nearby Austinville. The Cliff Branch Trail is a good hiking trail close to New River. The amount of precipitation that falls at New River is close to the national average. Most of the rain falls through May, and the driest of the months is November.
