If you're coming from Mount Airy it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful Carroll/ Wythe/ Pulaski/ Grayson County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down New River attract people from near and far. The average Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that lots of rivers in |
this state are good for beginners. The Fries to Allisonia section of New River in Virginia is 32 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. Not
| too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. A stretch of this length does require some preparations, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come.
