Virginia whitewater, Piney River

Nelson Amherst county, Alhambra to Woodson section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III-IV     3.5 miles
The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so keep in mind that many of the rivers in this state are not very demanding. The scenic beauty of Virginia and the cool fresh water beats anything. The put-in location is a short drive from Staunton-Waynesboro, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This section of Piney River is 3.5 miles long
and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV section of whitewater. This is a short paddling stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Getting some good exercise and spending
some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations
you might end up sleeping in your car.

Briefly about the general area:
Going for a hike along the Tolley Gap Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this region. Here at Piney River you'll probably meet some folks from Montebello, and if the weather is pleasant, you can go for a hike along the White Rock Gap Trail. This is such a great river. You'll never forgive yourself if you don’t go skiing at Wintergreen if you're here. Piney River sees pretty high levels of rain. The wettest month of the year is ordinarily October, that's the one that rains the most, and January is the month with the least moisture.
