This stretch of Rapidan River in Greene/Madison County is 15 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-IV section. The beautiful scenery of Virginia and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking     outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Shenandoah National Park to Route 29 section is one of them. There's camping available near Rapidan   River. Briefly about the general area: You need to have a look at Mitchell Bluff while you're here at Rapidan River, and the Jones Mountain Trail offers hiking at its best. Rapidan River is not far at all from Hood, and there's great hiking along the Staunton River Trail. This river is so perfect. An average amount of rain falls at Rapidan River.
