Virginia whitewater, Rivanna River - North Fork

Albemarle county, Advance Mills to Route 29 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II     12 miles

This section of river is only runnable during high water and you will be walking during a typical July.  Hit it when it is high and you'll have some fun.  (I'm not sure there is anything that approaches Class II though)  Beware of a small dam at the Camelot subdivision but better yet, put in below the dam at 29 and run it to the S. fork of the Rivanna and beyond to Darden Towe.  Look for the nesting bald eagles.     This stretch of Rivanna River - North Fork in Virginia is 12 miles long and is a class II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The wonderful Virginia scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water
are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The average Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so don't forget that rivers in this state are less demanding. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Advance Mills to Route 29 section is one of them. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that
around here. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your camp stove. There are some good hotels near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came.

Briefly about the general area:
Going for a hike on the Saddleback Mountain Trail is always a splendid adventure; lots of people from Earlysville come here. Go for a hike on the South River Falls Trail.
