The starting location is a short drive from Charlottesville, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This stretch of Roach River in Albemarle County is 6 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. Since you're on this site you     are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. On this section you do get some distance, it's good length for a morning trip. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so you'd better keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the St. George to North Fork Rivanna River stretch is one of them. For all you camping people   there are campgrounds nearby. Briefly about the general area: Good hiking is available along the Saddleback Mountain Trail, and at Roach River you always meet someone from Dyke. There's great hiking along the Hensley Hollow Trail. At Roach River through the summertime highs are in the 80's with night lows in the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's while the cold winter nights at Roach River are in the 20's. Roach River gets a normal amount of precipitation. The month with most of the rain is August; January is the month with the least moisture.
