Says Eric This stretch of Smith River in Virginia is 9.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section.     The beautiful scenery of Patrick County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good rivers for that around here. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The Charity to Backwater of Philpott Lake stretch is one   of a few paddling stretches in this river system. The put-in location is a short drive from Martinsville, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.
