Virginia whitewater, Stoney Creek

Nelson county, Peggy's Pinch to Route 751 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV     0.8 miles
This section of Stoney Creek is 0.8 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class IV section of whitewater. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so better not forget that lots of rivers in this state are good for beginners. The wonderful Nelson County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle.
There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Peggy's Pinch to Route 751 section is one of them. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This stretch is very short so no need to
bring snacks. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling spots. The put-in location is a short drive from Staunton-Waynesboro,
if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page.

Briefly about the general area:
You'll meet a lot of people from Tyro here, and there is a wonderful hiking trail nearby called the Turkey Pen Ridge Trail. A day on the slopes of Wintergreen is just what you need, and close by Laurel Springs Gap is a good site to go. This river has so much to offer. Near Stoney Creek you find the Mills Creek Trail which is a great hiking trail. A normal amount of rain falls here at Stoney Creek. The wettest month of the year is ordinarily August, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month is February.
