CLASS II     7.6 miles
  This stretch of Cowlitz River in Lewis County is 7.6 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II section of whitewater. The wonderful Washington scenery and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The beautiful Northern Cascade Range scenery is an added bonus. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here
    more demanding, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people.
This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the La Wis Wis Campground to Packwood stretch is just one of many. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Hood River, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost.  
Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.

Briefly about the general area:
While you're here at Cowlitz River you can take a hike along the Tatoosh Trail, and people from Packwood love to come here. Life's too short to enjoy all the enjoyable stuff in the Northern Cascade Range. If the weather is fine here at Cowlitz River, you can go for a hike along the Backbone Ridge Trail. Cowlitz River is a wet location that gets a large amount of rain. Of all the months in a year January is the one with the most snow, and July meanwhile is the driest month.
