  The average Washington whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The beautiful scenery of Cowlitz County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general
    area you'll find lots of paddling places. The Upper Kalama Falls to Gobar Creek section of Kalama River in Cowlitz County is 15 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV section of whitewater. Great
exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The put-in is not too far from Longview-Kelso, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The beauty of the Northern Cascade Range is a great plus for this river. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your  
camp stove. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Upper Kalama Falls to Gobar Creek stretch is just one of them.

Briefly about the general area:
During your visit to Kalama River you'll meet some people from Ariel for sure. The Georges Peak Trail offers hiking at its best, and you certainly must go to Battle Ground Lake State Park since you're here. This river is so great. Kalama River sees pretty high levels of rainfall.
