The FR 21 Bridge to Q-1800 Bridge stretch of Matheny Creek is 4.2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV section. The beautiful scenery of Washington and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. The average Washington whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than |
those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. The nearby
| hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of places for that. The put-in location is a short drive from Port Angeles, as you can see on the road map further down. The Olympic Mountains scenery is wonderful. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. | |
|
This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's good length for a morning trip.
Briefly about the general area: Matheny Creek is not far at all from Amanda Park; hiking is a popular thing to
do around Matheny Creek; Bogachiel-Hoh Trail is a good local trail. Now, you may believe that's a lot but there's even more cool things to do here in the Olympic Mountains. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the
70's to Matheny Creek. Throughout the moonlight hours it's mostly in the 40's. High temperatures during the wintertime are normally in the 40's with winter lows in the 30's overnight here at Matheny Creek.
