CLASS IV-V+     4.5 miles
  This section of Big Beaver Creek in Nicholas County is 4.5 miles long and is a class IV-V+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The put-in is not too far from Oak Hill, if you're not familiar with the area
    there's a road map further down the page. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come
because it is a very popular destination. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places. The Craigsville to Gauley River section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. The wonderful  
West Virginia scenery and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile.

Briefly about the general area:
Go for a hike on the Perry Ridge Trail; if you're stopping by from Calvin, you won't be the only one. Good hiking is available along the Harris Siding Trail. A good deal of rain falls at Big Beaver Creek. Most of the rain falls through July; January is when it's the driest. Summertime at Big Beaver Creek comes with high temperatures in the 80's. For the duration of the dark hours of summer temperatures descend down into the 60's. During the winter highs are regularly in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Big Beaver Creek are in the 20's.
