West Virginia whitewater, Cherry River

Nicholas county, Watergate Inn to Gauley River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-III     9 miles
The Watergate Inn to Gauley River stretch of Cherry River is 9 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The wonderful Nicholas County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. If you're coming from Oak Hill it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This section
is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling spots.
There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in West Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so better not forget that rivers in this state are less demanding. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will
have you coming back for more. The Watergate Inn to Gauley River section is one of many paddling sections in this river system.
