  If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so keep in mind that quite a few of the sections in this state are pretty easy. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Oak Hill, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. There aren’t
    any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will
make you glad you came. This stretch of Gauley River in West Virginia is 8.4 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III(IV) section by American Whitewater. The wonderful Nicholas County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Gauley River have people coming here. On this section you do get some distance, you can easily run it on an afternoon. There's camping available near Gauley River.

Briefly about the general area:
 
While you're here at Gauley River you will meet lots of people from close by Calvin. Go for a hike on the Perry Ridge Trail, and don't leave Gauley River without first going for a hike along the Harris Siding Trail. This is such a fun river. Summertime highs at Gauley River commonly tend to be in the 80's, and the nighttime is a tad chillier of course, typically in the 60's. Daytime highs throughout the wintertime are in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Gauley River. Gauley River sees pretty high levels of rain. Most of the rain falls during July; the driest of the months is January.
