  The Confluence of right fork to Confluence of Elk River stretch of Leatherwood Creek in Clay County is 4.5 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II(III) section by American Whitewater. The average West Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so don't forget that a lot of the rivers in this state are suitable for beginners. On this section you do get some distance, it's good length
    for a morning trip. If you're coming from Oak Hill it's not a long drive at all to the starting location. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. This is the
only paddling stretch along Leatherwood Creek. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. The wonderful Clay County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile.

Briefly about the general area:
A tour to Hawks Nest State Park when you're here at Leatherwood Creek is a wonderful idea, and you could always discover Cannel Coal Hollow. Hiking along the Carnifex Trail is glorious fun, and at Leatherwood Creek you always meet someone from Bickmore. The surroundings of this river have so much to offer. Leatherwood Creek is right by the Way Back Trail. Leatherwood Creek is a rather wet place mostly with much rain. The month of July is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest month of the year is February.
