My family (2 - 40+ and 2 - preteens) put in near Zoar Baptist Church on West Mud River Road and used a machete to cut a path near a road drain that was located about 100 yards past the church. At the start of our trip we experienced a tree over the entire width of the river within 200 yards. I was able to exit my kayak and sit on the log and pull the other 3 kayakers still in there boat across the log.
Take Caution, that this kind |
of situation is not for the inexperienced! We continued our trip experiencing different obstacles and some class 1 water.
It was a fun and relaxing trip that lasted approximately 3.5 hours. We have seen a deer with
| baby, geese, several red woodpeckers, two garden snakes that drop into the river out of the trees (no joke, lol) and several other birds. If you decide to take this trip on this part of the Mud River, I would strongly advise to get out at the backside of the Milton Flee market. The Gates of the flee market are locked throughout the week, so make sure you plan to pullout during their hours of operation. Get permission, clear a path and/or take | |

a machete to make one when you get there. There are no warning signs. Do NOT go any further behind the City of Milton, or you will come to a dam with a 12-15 foot drop with rocks below.
This dam is located before
the bridge at Bill Blenko Road. No safe takeout near the dam!!! Have fun, but be safe. Says John J.
A few hundred yards from the put in spot is an old dam. Canoeing that fall is not advised. Just over a mile downstream
from that is the mud river falls.Depending on water levels. It could prove to sink a canoe. Says localguide1
Jim is not entirely correct. There is the Ona falls. Catch the water up and that would be interesting. Says

This is an answer to Cindy's question about the Guyandotte River. There is a put-in at Branchland, then a take-out 3 1/2 hours downstream at Salt Rock. A very nice float with a few riffles, lots of fish and wildlife
for viewing. You can also put-in or take-out at the mouth of Mud river in Barboursville which is good for a Mud River or Guyandotte River float. Salt Rock to B'ville would be a great all day float on the Guyandotte, I'm
guessing 10 to 12 miles. Says Mike
There is no way there could be any rapids on the Mud River. I agree with the writer below. However, I would love to flatwater kayak down the Guyan which is closer to Beech Fork State
Park than the Mud. It connects to the Mud in Barboursville and runs into the Ohio a few miles later. It should be a very plesant peaceful trip. I just can not locate a putin spot. Can any one help? I live 10 miles away from
the BF campground. Thanks Says Cindy
There is no whitewater on the Mud River. I have walked and canoed the Mud River many times. There might be a few ripples if there's enough water in the river. During the summer
months it looks more like a creek rather than a river. Don't get excited or waste your time. The Mud River is a great place to go Muskie fishing. If your want a true whitewater experience go to the New River of Gauley River. Says Jim
