  The starting location is a short drive from Clarksburg, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The wonderful Upshur County scenery and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This stretch of Sand Run in Upshur County is 6.4 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II(III) section by American Whitewater. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area
    you'll find lots of paddling rivers. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay
the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Confluence of Beech Run to confluence of Buckhannon River section is one of them. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so better not forget that lots of rivers in this state are good for beginners. This section  
is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.

Briefly about the general area:
While you're here at Sand Run you will meet lots of folks from nearby Volga. Don't leave Sand Run without first paying a visit to Excelsior School Spring; don't leave without visiting Audra State Park. This is such a great river. Through the days of summer at Sand Run temperatures are ordinarily in the 80's. Summer night lows sink down to the 50's. During the wintertime this place gets highs in the 30's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Sand Run.
