  The wonderful West Virginia scenery and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. The Valley Falls to Hammond stretch of Tygart Valley River is 1.5 miles long and it is classified as a class II-IV section by American Whitewater. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in West Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are very
    easy. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This is a pretty short section so you'll have to walk back to the start
over and over. There are some good hotels near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places. The put-in location is a short drive from Fairmont, as you can see on the road map further down.

You positively ought to stop at Tygart Lake State Park since you're
 
here at Tygart Valley River, and at Tygart Valley River you always meet someone from Fairmont. Valley Falls State Park is a great location to stop by on a pretty day. Tygart Valley River frequently gets a good deal of rain. Through July this area sees the most rain, and the driest month of the year is February. Through the summertime months here at Tygart Valley River, high temperatures frequently get into the 80's. For the duration of the moonlight hours it's commonly in the 60's.
