  The put-in is not too far from Merrill, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Wisconsin is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the rivers in this state are not very demanding. This section of Flambeau River - North Fork in Iron/Ashland County is 14.1 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater.
    Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve
in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The scenic beauty of Iron/Ashland County and the cool fresh water beats anything. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. If you have the time you can  
make this a two day trip, so why not pack your sleeping bag too.

Briefly about the general area:
A visit to Simmons Rapids will fill your spirit with good feelings, and if you're visiting from Butternut, you won't be the only one. You beyond doubt have to stop at Island Lake if you're here at Flambeau River - North Fork; the Newman Springs Ski Trail is a glorious hiking trail nearby. This river is so wonderful. Bear Skull Rock is something you shouldn't miss if you're here at Flambeau River - North Fork. From a rainfall point of view Flambeau River - North Fork is a rather typical spot.
