CLASS II-IV(V)     3.2 miles
  This section of Montreal River is 3.2 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-IV(V) section of whitewater. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Merrill, as you can see on the road map further down. The scenic beauty of Wisconsin and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. There are some good hotels near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Some people prefer
    whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. This river
system is full of great paddling stretches, the Highway 2 to Erickson Road stretch is just one of them. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so keep in mind that a lot of the rivers in this state are suitable for beginners. This is a pretty short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. You can pitch a tent or park your  
RV at a nearby campground. The beautiful Gogebic Range scenery is an added bonus.

Briefly about the general area:
Montreal River is right by the Rainbow Falls Trail, and the slopes of Big Powderhorn Mountain are so inviting nobody can resist. And if that's not sufficient there's lots more entertaining things to do in the Gogebic Range. This is a popular site for people from Gile, and you undeniably ought to go to Island Lake if you're here. This river has so much to offer. Montreal River gets a typical amount of precipitation. The month of June is the wettest with most of the rain while February is typically the driest month.
